The Regional Innovation Clusters
Piedmont was the first Italian region to officially establish the Innovation Poles in its territory in consideration of the specific vocations of each territory, to take advantage of the Structural Funds Europe POR FESR for the financing of research projects and services for innovation.
Today the 7 Poles are a Network of Excellence of Companies, Research Centers and Institutions for the smart, sustainable and inclusive growth of Piedmont, and the ICT Pole is an active part of this Network, linked to the other Poles of collaboration and complementarity relationships.

IRES, the institute of social and economic research in Piedmont, has conducted a counterfactual study to understand whether participation in the innovation clusters has produced effects on the company’s economic performance or not. The analysis sample consists of joint stock companies participating in the measure in the 2007-2013 programming cycle. In the media, in the three years following accession, a positive effect on turnover of 6.2% was estimated.
The effect is calculated as a comparison between the performance observed at the participating companies (group of treaties) and what was observed at the non-members companies similar by sector of economic activity and budget structure located in Piedmont (control group). The study found positive signs of participation also in terms of total factor productivity (TFP) and number of employees.
