Theia Sense

Theia Sense is an Italian deep-tech startup and a spin-off of Politecnico di Torino and Fondazione LINKS, developing advanced Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) systems based on fiber optic sensors for space applications and extreme environments. Our mission is to give satellites, launch vehicles, and space stations a “nervous system,” enabling them to continuously monitor their own structural health.
Our AI-powered platform integrates miniaturized fiber optic sensors, optoelectronic hardware, and software incorporating machine learning algorithms and digital twins. The system can measure parameters such as strain, temperature, vibrations, pressure, and shear strain, while offering extremely low mass and reduced cabling, immunity to electromagnetic interference, and the ability to integrate multiple sensors along a single optical fiber.
The technology can be installed during ground qualification testing and remain onboard throughout the mission, creating continuity between ground testing and in-orbit operations. In this way, Theia Sense aims to improve safety and reliability, reduce testing time and costs, and enable predictive maintenance as well as increasingly autonomous and reusable space systems.
